Monsignor Edward J. Kissane DD, LSS, (1886-1959) was an Irish priest, educator and Biblical Scholar. Born in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry, he was ordained a priest before pursuing further study in the Biblical Institute in Rome, he travelled to the Holy Land pursuing his Old Testament studies, and was much published on the subject. Dr. Kissane taught at (Augustine's Seminary ), Toronto, Canada, as professor of Sacred Law for four years. In 1917 he returned to Ireland becoming Professor of Old Testament studies and Oriental Languages in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth.〔(President of Maynooth Dies ) By Fr. J. Crehan, S.J., Catholic Hearld, 27 February 1959〕 Dr Kissane was appointed vice-president of Maynooth College in 1941 and from June 1942 he served as College President until 1959.〔(Kalendarium Appointments ) Maynooth College.〕 Elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 1942 Monsignor Kissane was in 1949 appointed pro-vice chancellor of the National University of Ireland.
